household for the coming year. If the candle is to go out, it is
said to mean bad luck for the household.

the doors of their home at midnight on Christmas eve. This would be
done to let out any trapped evil spirits.

It is considered to be unlucky to send Christmas
carollers away empty handed, regardless of how badly they sing!
